Frequently Asked Solvang Camp Questions
UPDATED: 10/10/2006
• Can we still secure with a $100 deposit? Now that Registration is open on Active.com, deposits are no longer available. All athletes must register online to secure their inclusion in the camp. The deposit acted as pre-registration.
• What sort of shape do you recommend your participants of your training camp be in? It is recommended that campers show up having trained through the winter months up to a 4 hour ride… longer would be even better. This is a base training camp at a low intensity done as a group thus a great opportunity to stretch your endurance in a safe, supported environment.
• Is it geared towards high end endurance athletes only? No… not at all. We have folks registered that can turn a 4:30 Century and a 7:30 Century. There is a lot to be said for easy base miles and stretching your endurance. The camp is structured to support both ends of the spectrum.
• Will this be a good camp if I’m doing Wildflower? Absolutely… it is a great opportunity if doing any spring racing or events such as Wildflower, California ½ IM, Auburn Intl., Solvang Century, San Dimas Stage Race, Conquer the Canyons Stage Race, etc…
• How many athletes may attend the training camp? Maximum is 20
• What are the routes for Cycling and Running? The cycling routes are still being determined but will include most of the Solvang Century route and two 40 to 50 mile routes. Running routes will be out and back runs, hopefully on nicely groomed trails around the lake.
• What do participants need to bring? Each camp participant will need to bring:
o Bike
o Cycling clothes for 3 days of riding in all weather conditions
o Running clothes for all weather conditions for 2 days,
o Cycling Helmet (No Helmet = NO RIDE…NO EXCEPTIONS)
o Casual/Comfy clothes for 3 days… Wine tasting clothing is casual as well ïŠ
o Water bottles: the camp will provide drinks but participants need to bring 2 water bottles for their bikes
o Towel
• What will the SAG support consist of? SAG will be provided by Incycle Bike Shop. We will have an SUV following the group with food, drinks, tubes, tires, a few ready to ride wheels, 2 bike carrier… just in case, tools and anything else we can think of to support the participants.
• Where/What is the lodging? Lodging has been secured at Zaca Lake in Los Olivos just outside of Solvang… it’s where The Creature From The Black Lagoon was filmed. http://www.zacalakeretreat.com . Everyone will stay in one large cabin complete with beds, bathrooms and kitchen. We want to make sure everyone is comfortable while sharing the experience family style. Our intention is to put on a group camp where we can all share good training, good company and good food all in a great location free from the normal pace of life.
• What will the meals be like? I love to cook and I love eat… put that in the middle of cycling with fun people and I’m very happy ïŠ. The menu is still being planned but should look something like this:
o Breakfast = Cereal, Oatmeal, Eggs, Bagels, Coffee, Juice, etc…
o Lunch = Pasta, Sandwiches, etc…
o Dinner = Risotto (B’s risotto is legendary!), Chicken, Lasagna (meat & veggie), veggies, sides…
o Snacks = Fruit, Trail Mix, cookies, etc…
• What will the “Swag†item be? Nice try ïŠâ€¦ a few items are being considered…
• Will there be a participant guide? Yes… I’m working on the guide as the camp develops and we prepare to go live with Registration on October 1st.
